Medaille Militaire

Spouse: Gertrude Maude Ward (formerly Sutherland), of Highfield House, Ludgershall, Andover, Hants.

Buried: Cement House Cemetery, XVIII. B. 8.

As a regular soldier Alexander Sutherland was part of the British Expeditionary Force and was amongst the first casualties of the war.   In an early cavalry attack near Mons he reached down to help a French cavalry
officer and was shot in the back and died from his wounds.  The French officer survived and remembered Alexander who was posthumously awarded the French Medaille Militaire.

The original Dornoch War Memorial WW1 plaque bearing Alexander's name did not include mention of his award but, following representation, this was corrected with the addition of a small raised bronze 'Medaille Militaire' plaque against his name.
